Part A:
1)   There is an article in Men’s Health magazine that talks about the advantages of eating a protein rich diet. In one section it states: the more protein you eat the more muscle you build.
2)   a.Protein builds muscle
b.  I eat protein
àI build muscle
       4) The argument is both valid and true (sound)àboth of the premises provided are objective statements indicating an action. Because the premises are both positive without other negative elements, the argument is sound.
       5)  I eat protein I will eventually build muscle à [(p à~q)^~q]à~p

This statement does not have a mathematical solution because it isn’t a Tautology. It isn’t a tautology because of the premise I eat protein; the conclusion therefore being dependent on one eating the protein. If the premise had been If you eat proteinàyou will build muscle the argument would’ve been mathematically solvable and a tautology. Tautologies and truth tables are useful to examine the exact language needed to make something both naturally and mathematically true.

  1. You have a great explanation of tautologies and truth tables and you made everything very clean and easy to understand

  2. I like your explanation on tautologies-I think it helped me understand them a bit more actually. I hadn't really thought of how you need the language to be exactly a certain way for something to be mathematically true.

  3. I really liked this argument and thought you did a great job on the truth table. My only suggestion would be to label your major and minor premises and your conclusion.
    Major: Protein builds muscle
    Minor: I eat protein
    Conclusion: Therefore, I build muscle

  4. jon,

really good article for your post. the beginning portions of the blog are good, although, missing your venn diagram. your truth table set up is correct, however, there is an error, since your argument IS a tautology. where are the answers to questions 7-10?
