1. Eating food after 8pm will cause you to gain weight
2. Anyone who eats food after 8pm will gain weight
p- Food
q- 8pm
x- Gaining weight
3. Will be uploaded as a picture
4. It is valid but not necessarily true because there is not enough evidence backing up the claim to determine if it is actually true
5. If you eat food after 8pm then you will gain weight
6. a) It is not a tautology so this doesn't apply
b) Not necessarily. This truth table doesn't take into account the number of facts, etc. backing up this claim
c) Therefore truth tables are not very useful in this context.
7. Consider the source: The source is lifehack.org which I am unsure is a very good website because I have never heard of it before. Even though sources that end in org. are usually more trustworthy, I am not going to just blindly trust this source.
Check the Date: This was written on September 14th, 2013
Validate accuracy: I read two other articles that said that eating after 8pm will cause you to gain weight. However, I also found three articles that stated that the rule is actually to not eat after 7pm. Therefore I still do not know whether to trust the source.
Watch for hidden Agendas: There are many ads alongside the article advertising healthy cooking products. Therefore this article may be meant to try to sell things instead of give people the facts.
Don't miss the big picture: Generally this claim makes sense, but I am not going to trust it blindly.
8.Yes this is a fallacy because the article does not back up its claim with any scientific information or data. This falls under the category of Appeal to Emotion because women that are looking at this article are probably trying to find good ways to lose weight and this article seemingly provides a solution for that.
9. Yes this helped me to think more critically about media information and not to just blindly trust a source without evaluating its accuracy and looking for hidden agendas.
good way of explaining for number 3.
ReplyDeletehanna,
ReplyDeleteyou chose a good topic for this assignment. there are some portions that are missing/incomplete, however. for example, your p and q are so vague in the beginning portion that it really isn't possible to evaluate the statement using a venn diagram. you have shown the work for a conditional truth table, but i you would have noticed in the examples provided for this assignment, there are numerous columns missing. i do like your response to question number nine, and i am glad that the assignment helped you to think a little more clearly about media information.
